Sometimes, when levelling up to an electric vehicle, the prospect of charging seem a bit overwhelming at first. But fear not, we've got your back. Our mission at GWM ORA is to simplify the EV experience, and that's exactly why we've crafted this useful guide to demystify charging your ORA.
Let's start at the beginning: you have three charging methods at your disposal.
- At a public charging point
- At a rapid charger
- At your own home
Caution! We would advise, prior to using a mains socket that you have the socket checked by an approved electrician to confirm that the socket and associated components can carry the required load. Alternatively, we would recommend you have a dedicated XXXV/XX Amp socket installed.
HOW DOES CHARGING ACTUALLY WORK?
ORA comes with a combined charging system (CCS). In other words, one socket for all three ways of charging.

WHAT'S AC/DC ALL ABOUT?
Power from the grid is always AC. It's converted into "battery power" using the car's internal onboard converter – converting the AC power into DC power, which is then fed into the car battery. When you come across "AC" it will always refer to home charging and on-street charging.
With DC power from rapid chargers, the DC converter is inside the charge point itself (rather than inside the car). Because it feeds power directly into the car without it going through the car's onboard converter, it can charge at a much faster rate.
HOME CHARGING MADE EASY
There are many suppliers offering home charge solutions. To make life easy, we're offering integration with GWM's S-VOLT Home Solar Power Generation Systems, so you won't ever be left without a charge, and your ORA will tap into the GridCars charging station network with over 350 charge points around South Africa.
